  • Thank You Messages, Quotes & Card Ideas for Teachers

    • 6 min read

Ask any teacher what end-of-year gift meant the most and the answer is almost always the same: the card. Not the voucher, not the box of chocolates — the handwritten note, especially when it's in a child's own words.

If you're stuck on what to write, you're in the right place. Below you'll find thank you messages for teachers from both children and parents, quotes worth borrowing, short poems, and — because Ireland is Ireland — a section on how to say it as Gaeilge.

Thank You Card Messages from a Child

    Junior Infants & Young Children

At this age (4–5 years), most children are still learning to write their own names by end of Junior Infants — so realistically, a parent writes the message and the child signs it, draws a picture, or adds a few letters themselves. That's perfectly fine and still deeply meaningful to the teacher. From Senior Infants and 1st class onwards, children can start writing short sentences with a little help.

    • "Thank you for being my teacher. I loved learning with you."

    • "You are the best teacher. Thank you for everything."

    • "I will miss you. You made school fun."

    • "Thank you for teaching me to read. I love books now."

    • "You were so kind to me this year. Thank you."

    • "I hope you have the best summer. You are a great teacher."

    Senior Primary (3rd–6th Class)

A little more personal — encourage them to mention something specific they remember or learned.

    • "Thank you for always believing in me, even when I didn't believe in myself."

    • "This year was one of my favourites because of you. Thank you for making it special."

    • "I'll always remember the way you explained things — it made everything click."

    • "Thank you for being patient with me. I worked hard this year because you made me want to."

    • "You made 6th class something I'll never forget. Thank you for everything."

    • "I'm nervous about secondary school, but you've made me feel ready. Thank you."

    Secondary School

Irish secondary school relationships are often warmer and more personal than people expect — especially with teachers students have had for several years or who guided them through State Exams. These messages reflect that more natural, chatty tone.

    • "Thank you for making a subject I was convinced I'd hate into one of my favourites."

    • "You pushed me harder than I thought I could go — and I'm grateful for it."

    • "Getting through the Leaving Cert without losing my mind was partly down to you. Genuinely, thank you."

    • "You've been more of a mentor than just a teacher — I won't forget that."

    • "Thank you for treating us like we were capable of great things. It made us try harder."

    • "This year was tough with the State Exams, but you made it manageable. I really appreciate everything you did."

Thank You Card Messages from Parents

    Short and Sweet (2–3 Lines)

Perfect when you want to say something genuine without overthinking it.

    • "Thank you so much for everything you've done for [child's name] this year. We're so grateful."

    • "[Child's name] has grown so much this year — and that's down to you. Thank you."

    • "We couldn't have asked for a better teacher. Thank you for a wonderful year."

    • "Thank you for your kindness, your patience, and your dedication. It hasn't gone unnoticed."

    More Heartfelt (4–5 Lines)

For when you want to say a little more — especially at the end of a significant year like 6th class.

    • "As we come to the end of what has been a really special year, we just want to say a genuine thank you. [Child's name] has come on in leaps and bounds, and so much of that is down to your encouragement and belief in them. We feel very lucky to have had you as their teacher."

    • "It's hard to put into words how much this year has meant to our family. [Child's name] went from being nervous and unsure at the start of the year to confident and excited about learning — and you made that happen. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

    • "Teachers like you are rare, and we know it. Thank you for the care, the patience, and the genuine interest you've shown in [child's name] this year. We'll always be grateful."

    End of Year Specific

    • "As we finish up this school year, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you — for everything you've given to [child's name] and to the whole class."

    • "What a year it's been. Thank you for steering the ship so well and making it such a happy one for our child."

How to Say Thank You to a Teacher in Irish (As Gaeilge)

This is something a lot of Irish parents search for and very few resources cover well. Here are some genuine, usable phrases:

    Basic:

    • Go raibh míle maith agat — Thank you very much (literally "may you have a thousand good things")

    • Go raibh maith agat as gach rud — Thank you for everything

    Addressing the teacher directly:
In Ireland, children often call their teacher "Múinteoir" as a title. When addressing them directly in a card, use the vocative case for a lovely authentic touch: "A Mhúinteoir, go raibh maith agat" — literally "Teacher, thank you."

    From a child:

    • Ba tusa an múinteoir is fearr a bhí agam riamh — You were the best teacher I ever had

    • Míle buíochas as do chuid cabhrach — A thousand thanks for your help

    • Ní dhéanfaidh mé dearmad ort go deo — I will never forget you

    From a parent:

    • Táimid an-bhuíoch díot as an gcúram a thug tú do [ainm an linbh] — We are very grateful to you for the care you gave [child's name]

    • Is múinteoir iontach thú — You are a wonderful teacher

Even just opening a card with
"A Mhúinteoir, míle buíochas" before continuing in English is a lovely touch that teachers in Irish schools genuinely appreciate.

A Few Tips to Make the Card Extra Special

Whoever is writing the card, a few small things make a big difference:

    • Let the child write it themselves — even if it's messy, it means more

    • Mention something specific — a memory, a moment, something they said that stuck

    • Keep it genuine — a simple honest sentence beats an elaborate one that doesn't feel real

    • Pair it with flowers — a beautiful thank you bouquet alongside a heartfelt card is a combination that's hard to beat
